The center of a powerful civilization, Meroë served as the capital city of the Kingdom of Kush, an empire that thrived for centuries along the east bank of the Nile River in present-day Sudan. The place hosts over 200 pyramids that serve as tombs to Nubian kings and queens.

One of the most remarkable features of the Meroitic civilization was its strong queens called Kandake. They were highly educated, periodically ruled their kingdom, and fought to protect their empire from outsiders. 

The city of Meroë was home to some of the most powerful empires in Africa. It was a city of fabulous wealth that thrived on trading gold and a variety of precious goods.
